Keeping a Rented Hospital Bed Clean Throughout the Rental
A clean hospital bed is more comfortable for the patient and easier to return. Here is a daily, weekly and monthly routine that is easy to follow.

A hospital bed at home is used all day: for sleeping, eating, taking medication and sometimes for receiving visitors. Dust, crumbs and spills build up quickly in the gaps of the bed. Left alone, the bed becomes less comfortable for the patient and harder to clean later.
With a rented bed there is one more reason to keep it clean: it is going back. This guide gives families a simple routine with no harsh chemicals and no damage to the bed. If the patient has specific infection-control needs, follow the instructions of the nurse or doctor treating them, as theirs come first.
Know the Parts That Need Cleaning
Each part of a hospital bed needs a slightly different approach. Before you start, identify these parts.
Frame and head and foot boards
The metal frame and the boards at the head and foot are touched by hand the most. Wipe them with a damp cloth and mild soap, then dry with a clean cloth. Avoid hard brushes or steel wool, which scratch the surface.
Side rails and handles
Side rails are gripped by the patient and the carer many times a day. Wipe them at least once a day, especially after meals. Do the same for the cranks on a manual bed or the remote on the Electric Auto hospital bed.
Take care with electrical parts
On an electric bed, never spray water directly onto the motor, cables or remote. Unplug the bed first, wipe with a cloth that is only slightly damp, and let it dry before plugging back in.
Mattress and mattress cover
KatilCare's monthly rental includes a Hopkins mattress. Protect it with a sheet and, if needed, a waterproof underpad. If something spills, wipe it immediately and let it dry fully before putting on a fresh sheet. Never soak the mattress or leave it out in the rain.
What to use and what to avoid
Most cleaning on a home hospital bed needs nothing more than what is already in the kitchen. What matters is how you use it.
- Fine: warm water, mild dishwashing soap, a microfibre cloth and a dry cloth to finish.
- Fine with care: disinfectant wipes or spray on high-touch surfaces, used as the label says and never left to pool.
- Avoid: strong bleach, solvents such as thinner, scouring powder and pressure sprayers.
If you are not sure whether a product is safe for the bed, test it on a small hidden spot first, or ask us on WhatsApp before using it.

Daily, Weekly and Monthly Routine
A short routine is easier to keep up than an occasional big clean. Split the work into three layers.
Every day
- Brush crumbs and dust off the sheet after meals.
- Wipe the side rails, handles and remote.
- Make sure no cups or plates are left on the bed.
- Check the sheet for spills and change it if it is wet.
Every week
- Change and wash the sheet and pillowcases, or more often if needed.
- Wipe the whole frame, including the underside of the head board.
- Sweep and mop the floor under the bed.
Every month
- Clear hair and thread wrapped around the wheels.
- Check the power cable of an electric bed for any damage.
- Inspect the mattress cover for small tears.
Wheels and floor
Hair, thread and dust wrap around wheels easily. Clear them with a gloved hand or tweezers. Clean wheels roll more easily when the bed has to be moved a little for sweeping, and they lock again more reliably.
When to Contact Us
Routine cleaning is the family's job, but some things should be reported so the bed stays safe to use.
Normal wear and tear
Normal wear and tear on a rented bed is repaired or replaced free of charge, for example a wheel that is getting stiff or a mattress cover worn from daily use. Send us a photo on WhatsApp so we can take a look.
Damage from misuse
Damage caused by misuse or accident may be charged, assessed case by case. Some avoidable examples: spraying water on the motor, using strong bleach on the frame, or letting children play with the bed.
Before the bed goes back
Strip the sheet, throw away any disposable pads and give the bed a full wipe-down. It makes the return easier and shows the bed's true condition. First-time renters pay a refundable deposit of RM200–RM500, with the exact amount given on WhatsApp when you book.
Want to know more about rental packages? See the beds and prices on our homepage. Delivery and installation are free in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, including Kuala Lumpur and Puchong. For Kuantan and other states, delivery is RM100–RM500 and we quote the amount on WhatsApp before you book.
