Sharing the Care: Making One Hospital Bed Work for Several Family Members

Many families care for a parent in shifts. Here is how to make sure everyone uses the same hospital bed in the same way.

Sharing the Care: Making One Hospital Bed Work for Several Family Members

In many Malaysian homes, caring for a bedbound parent is not one person's job. The eldest child takes the weekend, a sibling who lives nearby comes in the evening, an in-law helps in the morning, and sometimes there is a domestic helper or a paid carer too. Everyone uses the same hospital bed, but not everyone uses it the same way.

Small differences, like a different backrest angle or a side rail left down, can leave the patient confused and uncomfortable. This article shares practical ways to make one bed work well for several carers. For clinical matters such as lying angles or a turning schedule, follow the doctor, nurse or physiotherapist treating the patient, and make sure every carer hears the same instructions.

One Way for Every Carer

The patient is most comfortable when their daily routine is consistent, whoever is on duty. The first step is making sure every carer knows the bed in the same way.

A bed function card

Write a short card and stick it to the foot of the bed. List what each crank or button does, how to lock the wheels, how to raise and lower the side rails and, for the Electric Auto hospital bed, how to use the emergency lowering function. The card is a great help to carers who only come once a week.

Agreed positions

  • The backrest angle for meals and for sleep, as advised.
  • Whether the foot section should be raised, and when.
  • Where the side rails sit during the day and at night.
  • The bed height when the patient is left alone.

Show, do not just tell

When a new carer takes over for the first time, walk through each step at the bedside. Let them try it while you watch. Those five minutes save plenty of misunderstanding later.

Bed Height for Different Carers

Carers in one family are rarely the same height. A tall brother may have to stoop to change a diaper, while a shorter aunt struggles to reach the middle of the bed.

Models with adjustable height

The Flexi II (RM325 a month to rent, RM1,800 to buy) and the Electric Auto hospital bed (RM580 a month to rent, RM3,200 to buy) both adjust in height. Each carer can raise the bed to their own waist level while working and lower it again when finished. The Standard hospital bed (RM225 a month to rent, RM1,250 to buy) adjusts the head and foot sections only, and suits households where carers rarely need to bend for long.

Simple house rules

  1. Raise the bed only while you are caring for the patient.
  2. Lower it again before leaving the room.
  3. Lock the wheels every time the bed is moved.

Protect every carer's back

Shared care means many people lifting, supporting and bending. If a family member already has back problems, give them less physical tasks, such as preparing meals or keeping the patient company.

Smooth Handovers

Mistakes happen most easily when one carer hands over to the next. A simple system closes that gap.

A notebook by the bed

Keep an ordinary notebook on the bedside table. Before leaving, each carer writes a few lines: meal times, when medication was given and by whom, position changes, anything unusual and anything the next carer needs to do. A family WhatsApp group works too, but a notebook at the bedside is easier for carers who are not holding a phone.

One contact person for the rented bed

  • Choose one family member as the main contact with us.
  • Keep receipts, deposit details and rental dates in one place.
  • If something breaks, the carer on duty takes a photo or video and sends it to that contact person.

When the patient moves house

Sometimes a family decides to move a parent to another sibling's home for a while. Let us know early on WhatsApp so we can explain the options for moving the bed. Delivery and installation are free in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, including Cheras and Klang. For other states, such as Alor Setar, delivery is RM100–RM500 and we quote it on WhatsApp before you book.

Choose the bed together

Talk with all the carers before picking a model, since they are the ones using it every day. See all three beds and their prices on our homepage, and send us your questions.
