Rent or Buy a Hospital Bed? Working Out the Break-Even With Real Prices

When is buying a hospital bed better value than renting? With the real prices of all three models, you can work it out yourself in a few minutes.

Rent or Buy a Hospital Bed? Working Out the Break-Even With Real Prices

After price, the question we hear most is: should we rent or just buy? The answer depends on one thing only the family can estimate, which is how long the hospital bed will be needed.

This article does not try to push you either way. It shows a simple calculation using KatilCare's real prices so you can decide for yourself. No discounts, no special packages, just arithmetic. How long the patient will need care is worth discussing with the doctor or medical team treating them, as they know the expected recovery best.

Rental and Purchase Prices for Each Model

KatilCare offers three hospital beds. Each can be rented monthly or bought outright.

Standard hospital bed (manual)

  • Rental: RM225 a month.
  • Purchase price: RM1,250.
  • Two positions (head and foot), crank, wheels, supports up to 200kg.

Flexi II hospital bed (manual)

  • Rental: RM325 a month.
  • Purchase price: RM1,800.
  • Three positions: backrest, leg rest and bed height.

Electric Auto hospital bed

  • Rental: RM580 a month.
  • Purchase price: RM3,200.
  • Fully remote-controlled, five positions plus Trendelenburg, built-in side rails, emergency lowering.

How to Work Out the Break-Even

The break-even point is the number of rental months that equals the purchase price. The formula is one line: purchase price divided by monthly rental.

The numbers for each model

  • Standard: RM1,250 ÷ RM225 = about 5.6 months.
  • Flexi II: RM1,800 ÷ RM325 = about 5.5 months.
  • Electric Auto: RM3,200 ÷ RM580 = about 5.5 months.

All three models land in almost the same place: the purchase price equals roughly five and a half months of rental. That gives a simple rule of thumb.

The rule of thumb

  • If you expect to need the bed for less than five months, renting usually costs less.
  • If you expect to need it for more than six months, buying is worth considering.
  • If your estimate is between five and six months, the difference is small and other factors matter more.

What if you really do not know?

This is the most common situation. After surgery or a stroke, families often cannot say how long the patient will need the bed. In that case many choose to rent first, since the minimum rental is one month, and then review after a few months once the picture is clearer.

Factors Beyond Price

The arithmetic is only half the story. A few other points belong in your decision.

What rental includes

Monthly rental includes the bed, a Hopkins mattress, delivery and installation. Normal wear and tear is repaired or replaced free of charge during the rental. For a purchase, ask us on WhatsApp what the price includes so you are comparing like with like.

The deposit

First-time renters pay a refundable deposit of RM200–RM500, with the exact amount given on WhatsApp. Regular customers pay none. Because the deposit comes back, it is not counted as a cost in the break-even sums above.

Space and what happens afterwards

A bed you buy stays in the house once the patient no longer needs it. Think about whether you have space to store it, or whether another family member might need it later. A rented bed goes back, and the room returns to normal use.

Changing models

A patient's needs sometimes change. Someone who starts on the Standard may later need adjustable height like the Flexi II, or a remote like the Electric Auto. Renting leaves room to review your choice, and you can talk to us on WhatsApp if needs change.

Questions to ask yourselves

Before deciding, try answering these together as a family. The answers often help more than the sums themselves.

  • What has the doctor or physiotherapist said about the expected recovery?
  • Will the patient stay in this house for the whole period of care, or might they move to a sibling's home?
  • Who will deal with the bed if something breaks after you have bought it?
  • Is the family more comfortable with a smaller monthly payment or a single payment up front?
  • Is another older family member likely to need the same bed before long?
